Professional Indemnity Insurance

Obtaining appropriate Professional Indemnity cover

Selecting an adequate level of coverage is not as straightforward as balancing exposure versus cost. The RIBA Insurance Agency (RIBAIA) offers risk management advice via our website. One particular suggestion that we recommend is to review contracts carefully, to seek advice and to always look into incorporating a liability cap. Although you should remember that limiting your liability under contract would only apply to claims made by the party you are in contract with and not third parties.

What you need to know about Professional Indemnity insurance:

  • ARB Requirement

Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance is a recommended requirement of the Architects Registration Board (ARB).

  • Claims Cover

PI Insurance is essentially designed to cover both claims against you and defence costs for mistakes you make whilst undertaking professional services.

  • ARB Guidelines

The ARB guideline is that architects have at least an indemnity limit of £250,000.

  • Legal Costs

Whilst an architect can easily arrange cover for office contents, motor insurance or similar cover, a claim against you for negligence can result in a huge settlement and could incur substantial legal costs which far exceed the fees you earn.
